Oilcan, Pumpkin

When there is more than one item in my still life paintings, I will often choose them by ensuring that the first letter of each is consecutive in the alphabet. For this painting, Oilcan, Pumpkin the consecutive letters are O and P. I have always loved painting white objects, because the process of depicting them realistically is to rarely, if ever, use pure white. White objects reflect and absorb colors from every direction. I was drawn to the rusty, pitted patina of the oilcan which I borrowed from my dad's workbench, where it was a staple for as long as I can remember.
