There are many reasons why I choose the items I paint; often difficult to articulate. There is a constant swirling of characteristics I consider, none more significant than another. One consideration is the technical difficulty of accurately and realistically representing the item in an oil painting. There are items far simpler than this vintage bait caster and all it’s intricate, rusty parts, but I lean towards a challenge like this. There’s also an emotional component, a nostalgia. I believe that objects, as they age, take on stories; not only the energy of the people who held and touched them, but also how they have survived decades, despite elements and time.
