There is a particular quality of light that exists only for about twenty minutes VERY early on a summer morning, before the day decides what it's going to be.

I was up early on a morning in late June. The peonies had been sitting in a Cloverdale Dairy (Rochester, NY) milk bottle on the table, because my friend Tammy had picked them at her flower farm and brought them to me to paint. The light hit the wall and turned it the color of a peach, and for a moment the whole room felt like it was lit from inside

I grabbed my camera and took about 237 photos before the moment left. The painting below is a result of just one of those captures.

Peonies don't last. That's part of what makes them worth paying attention to. They arrive in early summer in a rush of extravagance, and then they're gone, and you have to wait a whole year to see them again. The napkin was one I sourced from a spontaneous antique junket I went on in late Spring. It features a flower applique and a beautiful scalloped border. The little owl on the wooden wall plaque watches over all of it.

I painted this because I wanted to hold onto that morning. The light, the flowers, the quiet before everything else started.
