Dr. Jonathan Logan was an allergist and immunologist practicing in Canandaigua, New York, through FF Thompson Health. When I saw him in the 1990s, searching for answers to a mysterious and severe allergy, he recorded every patient note on a typewriter, long after most physicians had moved on to computers. There was something reassuring about that deliberateness. In a world moving faster every year, he chose to slow down and pay attention.

Decades later, his family offered me the extraordinary opportunity to borrow one of his typewriters to paint. It turns out he had several. When I sat down with it, I was once again searching for answers to my own health and the parallel was impossible to ignore. Dr. Logan had taught me, without either of us knowing it, that slowing down and paying close attention is sometimes the most powerful thing you can do. Painting his typewriter felt like finally learning that lesson for myself.
