When there are more than one item in my still life paintings, I will often chose them by ensuring that the first letter of each is consecutive in the alphabet. For this painting, Butterfly, Cigar boxes, Dahlia, the letters are B, C and D.

The original inspiration for this still life was the cigar boxes. I've always been intrigued by cigar boxes; not because of their original utilitarian purpose but for their secondary, but much more fascinating purpose as containers for love letters, buttons, money, trinkets, jewelry, ticket stubs, and personal treasures. They are often donned with labels and lettering that give them a mysterious and exotic peek into their world-wide travels. They are built to withstand much more than the cigars they are entrusted to protect. 

This contemporary realistic oil painting delivers a nostalgic nod to the enduring beauty of everyday objects, and the emotional connection we as a collective have with those objects.
