Shoes, Tissue paper

Original oil painting on deep profile canvas. I handcrafted the wood float-style frame using reclaimed oak slats used in local Finger Lakes wine production.

When there is more than one item in my still life paintings, I will often choose them by ensuring that the first letter of each is consecutive in the alphabet. For this painting, Shoes, Tissue paper the consecutive letters are S and T. 

This painting depicts a pair of circa 1940's classic black pumps nestled in a box wrapped in tissue. I purchased these at a local antique shop. I've actually worn them! I imagine that these shoes, whether they were for "everyday" or "special occasion" wear, that they were well kept and valued by their owner. They are in surprisingly good condition. On the inside of the shoe is written "Especially Yours, More Shoes". Morse Shoes was founded in 1922 and, I believe, operated in Canton, Massachusetts. This vintage black pump silhouette is a classic, iconic and timeless. I enjoyed painting the highlights that occur as a result of their satin texture.
