When there are more than one item in my still life paintings, I will often chose them by ensuring that the first letter of each is consecutive in the alphabet. For this painting, Butterfly, Cigar boxes, Dahlia the consecutive letters are B, C and D.
This one was inspired by cigar boxes, which have always held a sense of mystery to me. They are built strong, to hold delicate cigars, and outlast them by decades. They end up taking on an afterlife as containers for love letters, buttons, jewelry, money, ticket stubs, momentos, photos, secrets. On the outside, their labels, lettering, stamps and insignias represent far-off exotic places. They even carry with them a sexy scent, left behind long after their original cargo has been consumed. I appreciate these ubiquitous and utilitarian objects, and wanted to depict them and their lovely details. Butterflies represent transformation, and this painting symbolizes the transformation from deeply held beliefs and programming. As sentimental as those programs are, in the long run it's best to fly free from them.
